Management During Birth.

If the Doe is straining for 25 – 30 minutes and no baby is appearing, the doe may be in need of assistance. Obtaining the aid of an experienced owner, animal midwife or veterinarian is suggested if the owner is unsure how to assist during birth.

Management following birth
Following parturition, the doe will nuzzle, lick and dry her kid. The kid should stand very soon after birth and should nurse within the first hour of birth. If a kid is weak, it should be helped to nurse. The navel should be dipped in 2% to 7% iodine solution to help dry the umbilical cord and decrease the chance of infection. Handle newborn kids very little to encourage strong bonding between the doe and her offspring. If possible, put the doe with her kids in a small, clean area (pairing pen) for 2-3 days so they bond well and the kids have a chance to nurse frequently. Once the kids are strong, the kids can be ear marked, tattooed or tagged. After the pairing period, the doe and her kids can be put outside onto a clean pasture.
Immunizations
Kids should be vaccinated for sore mouth when they are 30 to 45 days of age. For kids from mother does that their annual enterotoxemia and tetanus vaccine(CD/T)3 to 4 weeks before kidding, their first CD/T vaccination should be given at 1 to 2 months of age with a booster injection 2 weeks later. If kids are from a doe that was not CD/T vaccinated, they should have their first CD/T vaccination at to 3 weeks of age and receive their booster immunization 2 weeks later. Kids should be dewormed at 3 to 4 weeks of age and again at 3 months of age (weaning)
Weaning
Kids should be weaned at 10 to 12 weeks of age. Weaning may be done gradually beginning about 8 weeks of age by having the kids remain in the barn in a clean pen with feed and water during the day while does are out grazing. At night the does can be reunited with their kids for suckling and rest. By 10 to 12 weeks of age the kids should be ready to be permanently separated from their dams. Weaned kids should be observed closely to be sure that they continue to gain weight and do not loose condition after being removed from their mothers.
Young doelings and young bucks should be kept separated after reaching 12 to 16 weeks of age (3-4 months old) to ensure that the doelings do not become pregnant.
